Greg was being a grump on his vacation until he got a little push from the other side....
This is one of the original Tell Me A Ghost Story calls from the early days of the show. Short, raw, and exactly where it all started. This call was later incorporated into a longer compilation episode with full host commentary if you want the complete experience.
Hey it's Michelle, and this one made me laugh out loud the first time I heard it and then made me think about it for days afterward. Greg from Los Angeles called in with a true ghost story from his summer vacation in London that is unlike almost anything else in the Tell Me A Ghost Story archive. This is not a frightening ghost story. It is a playful one.
Greg was visiting Soho House Dean Street in London with his husband, one of the most historic and atmospherically loaded buildings in a city that has more haunted real estate per square mile than almost anywhere else on earth. Greg had been feeling off all evening. Something about the energy of the building was registering in a way he could not quite name. Two strangers came and sat at his table uninvited. His vibe, as Greg puts it, was a little off.
When it was time to leave, Greg and his husband decided to explore one of the empty floors on their way out. Empty is the key word. The rest of Soho House Dean Street was packed that night. This floor had no one on it at all. Every time Greg turned a corner expecting to find someone he felt the presence of, there was nothing there. The feeling in his stomach said he should not be on that floor. He kept exploring anyway.
Then on the stairs he caught a glimpse of shoes behind him. He turned to finally see whoever had been just out of sight all evening. And at that exact moment something yanked his feet out from under him. Both legs flew into the air. His husband watched him go fully horizontal for a second before he dropped. It was, Greg says, like stepping on a cartoon banana peel. He had had one glass of wine. He knows how to walk. Something did that.
Greg did not feel afraid. He felt like he had been played with by something that had been dead for a very long time and had decided that his vacation was a good opportunity to have some fun. He left London with a giant bruise on his backside that stayed with him for the rest of the trip and disappeared completely on the flight home to California. Greg took that as a message. Come back. Visit again. Your friend in the stairway will be waiting.
One caller. One true ghost story from a historic members club in London where the ghost apparently has opinions about whether visitors are enjoying themselves enough. And a standing invitation to return.

[00:00:02] Welcome to Tell Me A Ghost Story. The late night call in podcast where we delve into the world of the supernatural and explore the eerie and unexplained. I'm your host, Michelle Newman. This podcast features true stories from our callers that will send shivers down your spine
[00:00:43] and leave you questioning the existence of the afterlife. So grab a cozy blanket, turn down the lights. Hey, this is Greg from Los Angeles, California. So last summer I was in London on vacation on holiday as the Brits would say. I was visiting Soho House Dean Street.
[00:01:10] So as in Soho, it's a very old building like every building in London or England. It has a definite sort of haunted feeling to it. And I have been feeling really weird that whole night.
[00:01:25] At one point these two girls they came up to sit at the table I was sitting at to smoke, which kind of bothered me because I don't smoke and but I didn't say anything to them about it.
[00:01:35] But I did think it was kind of strange that these two people just decided to sort of sit right next to me and do that at the table. And I was like, huh, I don't know. But my vibe was a little off.
[00:01:48] So I hung out for a little while, ate a meal, had a glass of wine, just one. And when it was time to head out back to the hotel, my husband and I we decided to explore one of the floors, you know, when we were going downstairs.
[00:02:05] And the entire floor was like a dining room area. And the entire floor was empty. No one was there for some reason, even though the entire Soho House was very busy. No one was on this floor. But we were sort of exploring and checking it out.
[00:02:22] And we would turn the corner like every time we turned the corner I kept feeling like someone was there and we turned the corner and no one was there. And I had this weird feeling in my stomach like maybe I shouldn't be here.
[00:02:34] Like I was going to get in trouble or something, even though it's a common area. So I don't know. I was just feeling kind of strange. But when it was finally time to leave, we went out to the stairs and as we started
[00:02:48] walking down the stairs, I caught something out of the corner of my eye back on that floor. It was like shoes. So I turned back around thinking I'm finally going to see the person that sort of been around the corner evading me the whole time.
[00:03:06] I turn around and at that exact moment, my feet flew out from under me. And it was as if I had been yanked and both of my legs went up into the air. My husband said I was fully horizontal for like a second and then I dropped down.
[00:03:24] It was almost comical how my legs flew out. It was like I had stepped on a banana peel and some cartoon and it was completely like I know how to walk and I had had one glass of wine. I knew it wasn't my legs.
[00:03:40] I sort of instantly knew that something weird was going on. And instead of being scared by that, I actually thought it was kind of funny. It was as if the ghost was sort of like, if it was a ghost.
[00:03:57] I think it was a ghost because I'm seeing shoes behind me and all of a sudden feeling like my legs are being yanked in front of me. Something, yeah, something did that even though I couldn't see it.
[00:04:09] So I got the impression that the ghost was sort of playing with me. It was like I've been dead for hundreds of years or however old this building is. You can enjoy your night and your vacation.
[00:04:22] Another weird thing, I did have like a giant bruise on my butt for the entire rest of the trip and it weirdly went away completely on the flight back to California. And it felt sort of very symbolic, like a reminder throughout the trip to have some
[00:04:36] fun and also come back and visit the Soho House in London again soon to see my friend in the stairway. Thank you, Greg, for your story. Greg has a great podcast when you're in the mood for something not scary and very funny.
[00:04:57] And I'll let him tell you about it. For more crazy stories like this, not usually ghost stories, but please check out my podcast Miss Thing with Greg and Tim. My co-hosts and I are two comedians and best friends.
[00:05:10] And in each episode we talked about an iconic celebrity, aka our Miss Thing of the Week, and do what we do best, which is make their iconic career achievements all about us. So you can watch it on YouTube or listen and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or
[00:05:25] wherever you get your podcasts. And thanks. I hope you like this story. That's all we have this week, folks. Do you have a ghost story? Call 701-484-2666. Or go to tellmeagostory.com and leave your story there.
[00:05:58] Go ahead and leave me a five-star review wherever you get your podcasts. Was something particularly scary in this episode? Or maybe you've had a similar experience. Leave your comments via our Spotify page. Thank you to all the callers who left messages this week.
